Designing a crochet piece from scratch can feel overwhelming, but for me, it's where the real magic happens.
Every design begins with an idea. While I call it a “sketch,” sometimes that means a messy doodle on a scrap of paper, an image I save to my phone, or just a picture in my head. No matter what form it takes, it's the beginning of the creative journey.
Every piece starts with a spark. Sometimes it’s something I see on Pinterest, a color combo another crocheter used, or even something hanging in my own closet. I collect ideas, save images, and build a mental moodboard (or let’s be honest, a messy camera roll).
Once I feel inspired, I grab my yarn and hook and start freestyling a rough version of the design. I take quick notes, snap photos, and film short clips while I crochet. There is a lot of trial and error in this phase, but I enjoy the process of figuring it out. Mistakes help me fine-tune the final design.
After I’m happy with how the piece looks and fits, I write the pattern in simple, step-by-step instructions. I design all my patterns to be easy to follow, even if you’re newer to crochet. I format them in Canva to keep everything clean, organized, and visually fun. I also include extra help like construction notes, photos, and sometimes video tutorials.
Before I share a pattern with the world, I send it to a group of trusted testers. They try it out, give feedback, and help me catch anything that might be confusing or unclear. Testers also help make sure the sizing works across different bodies and that the pattern feels polished and ready.
If you're working on turning your ideas into patterns and want a clearer path, I created a paid resource just for you. It breaks down everything I’ve learned about designing, formatting, testing, and confidently selling your patterns. Check it out here.
Want to see the final results of this process? My pattern collection is full of designs created using this exact method. You can browse them all here. Whether you're ready to start a new project or just looking for inspiration, I hope you find something you love.
